Start of project expansion of Eindhoven Airport terminal

18 November 2024, 12:27

Construction company Heijmans and Eindhoven Airport have signed the contract for the terminal expansion. The expansion will provide extra space, comfort, and experience, significantly enhancing the airport’s quality. During the official ‘start of construction’ ceremony today Roel Hellemons (CEO of Eindhoven Airport) symbolically handed over the key to the construction site to Ton Hillen (CEO of Heijmans).

The design for the expansion was created by EGM architects, Iv-Bouw, and Peutz. The project begins with the construction of the baggage basement. Around a year from now (November 2025), construction of the entrance hall will start. The highest point of the terminal is expected to be reached in the fourth quarter of 2025. The entire expansion is scheduled for completion in July 2027. The airport operations will continue throughout most of the construction period. From February 2027, there will be no air traffic and passengers for over five months due to large-scale work on the runway. This period will be used smartly to minimize inconvenience for passengers.

Water Basin

The expansion incorporates the latest developments in sustainability. Part of the roof will be covered with sedum plants, contributing to water retention and insulation of the terminal. A water basin will be installed in the basement to collect rainwater, which will be used for the toilets in the expansion.

The terminal expansion will be completely gas-free. Two thermal energy storage systems will be used for heating and cooling the terminal, one of which will be installed in the expansion. Nearly 1,100 solar panels will be installed on the roof of the terminal expansion, generating approximately 363,500 kilowatt-hours of energy annually, covering about 40% of the energy consumption in the new part of the terminal.

Safety

The airport and builder will ensure that passengers, staff, and the surrounding area experience minimal disruption from the construction work. Heijmans will use electric equipment as much as possible to reduce noise and emissions. Ensuring safety during construction is a high priority, with various safety measures in place. The transport route for construction traffic will have a minimum number of crossings with other processes in and around the airport. A construction ticket system will be used to regulate transports to the construction site. The access to the construction site is positioned away from public areas. When high-risk activities, such as installing sheet piles, along walkways on the construction site is carried out, it will be done during the night.

Eindhoven Airport is expanding the terminal because the current terminal is too small for the current number of passengers. The terminal was originally built for a maximum of 5 million passengers. In 2023, around 6.8 million passengers used the airport, and a similar number is expected this year. After the security check, there will be an additional 10,000 square meters, and about 2,000 square meters before the security check. The expansion will provide more space for airport processes and services, with more gates and dining options. Additionally, a game room, a quiet room, and a larger kids area will be added. The non-Schengen area and the arrivals hall will also be expanded, and a baggage basement will be built.
