Two Ministries under One Roof
The Resident, in the centre of The Hague, will be transformed into the new home of the Dutch ministries of Health, Welfare and Sport, and Social Affairs and Employment. The merging of the two ministries enables more efficient housing based on the ‘new way of working’. Approximately 2,400 workspaces will be created for 2,700 civil servants.
Old and New
The project involves the renovation of the buildings Helicon and Castalia (with its two pointed rooftops, referred to by the locals as ‘the Tits of The Hague’), both part of the Resident, and the building of a new atrium. Heijmans is responsible for the structural and technical installations.
Two Become One
An atrium over the Parnassusplein will connect the two buildings. After construction the square will remain accessible to everyone during the day.
LEAN and Mean
Thanks to ‘lean planning’, the duration of the contract will be reduced to just over a year.
The joint housing solution will result in a reduction of 40 percent office space of the Dutch government in The Hague. This will mean an annual savings from 2020 of approximately 170 million euros.
In the same area, Heijmans is also transforming and realizing the former housing of the ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations in the so-called ‘Wijnhavenkwartier’.
