Asphalt production is traditionally a very energy intensive process. Temperatures in excess of 160°C are needed in order to produce and apply asphalt.

Heijmans has a long history in developing new asphalt types. In recent years Heijmans has focused on research into more energy sufficient ways to process and produce asphalt. All of these efforts have now resulted in Greenway LE: an asphalt blend that is produced at lower temperatures and contains a higher share of recycled asphalt granulates.

Reduction in emissions

Greenway LE has been realized by combining Heijmans’ knowledge and experience with Shell’s technology and bitumen products. An innovative production process means asphalt can be produced and processed at a lower temperature (105°C instead of 160°C for traditional asphalt). This means an energy reduction of around 25% and a reduction in CO2, NOx, and other emissions. Another distinctive feature is that the low temperature allows up to 60% of the old asphalt to be re-used without making concessions in quality.

Greenway LE is supplied for the same price per ton as traditionally produced blends. This enables sustainability to be realized without additional costs.

In practice

The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment has extensively tested Greenway LE using test sections on the A2 highway (at the wide part of the A2 between ’s-Hertogenbosch and Eindhoven). Greenway LE was also implemented for a whole driving lane on the nearby N65 motorway. All of the tests were passed with flying colors. In terms of properties, the product is identical to the conventional hot variety. In the meantime, the product has been used for many other purposes both in the national, provincial, and municipal road network.
