Heijmans ONE nominated for INDEX: Award
February 19, 2015
The moveable single-occupancy house ‘Heijmans ONE’ has been nominated for the prestigious, international INDEX: Award. This design award is awarded every two years for innovations that improve life. The Heijmans ONE has been nominated in the category ‘Home’ with ‘Housing’ as the challenge and is competing against 16 other innovations within this theme.
Heijmans ONE intelligently combines the shortage of good temporary rental housing and the dreary sight of empty areas. Heijmans ONE appeals to young, single households between the ages of 25 and 35 and to public and private parties looking for a solution that will inject new life into their derelict sites. The first two Heijmans ONE houses have been situated on Zeeburger Island in Amsterdam since December 2014.
INDEX: Design to improve life
The INDEX: Award is the biggest and most important design award in the world. The importance lies in the unique, overarching theme of designs that improve life. These concern innovations whose design is used as an instrument to tackle the world's biggest challenges.
The Danish non-profit organisation wants to inspire, enable others to learn and to involve them in the development of sustainable solutions for the challenges in the world today. It does this by means of travelling exhibitions, educational programmes, partnerships between cities and investment initiatives.
In 2013 Daan Roosegaarde won the INDEX: Award’s ‘Mobility’ category with his Smart Highway. The Smart Highway is a collaboration between Heijmans and Studio Roosegaarde.
